HOLY THURSDAY (MAUNDY THURSDAY): THE BEGINNING OF THE SACRED TRIDUUM AND THE FOUNDATION OF THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH

Holy Thursday, traditionally known as Maundy Thursday, solemnly marks the beginning of the Sacred Triduum, the three holiest days in the life of the Church: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, culminating in the celebration of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. This sacred day commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the establishment of the Ministerial Priesthood, and Christ’s enduring example of humble service through the washing of the feet of His disciples — events that signify the spiritual foundation of the Universal Church.

The term Maundy is derived from the Latin word Mandatum, meaning commandment, taken from the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: “A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34). This command remains the guiding principle of Christian life and service.

As a parish community of St. Matthias Mulumba Catholic Church, Azhata, we use this sacred occasion to express our profound gratitude to our Priest in Charge, Rev. Fr. Dominic Nwaiwu, whose commitment, pastoral care, and spiritual leadership continue to strengthen our faith community. Your dedication to the service of God and His people does not go unnoticed. We thank you for your sacrifices, your prayers, your fatherly guidance, and your unwavering commitment to the growth of the parish.

We pray that the Almighty God, who has called you into His vineyard, will continue to grant you strength, wisdom, good health, and abundant grace in your priestly ministry. May your life and service continue to stand as a source of encouragement and inspiration not only to us your parishioners but also to your brother priests and all who labour in the Lord’s vineyard.

The symbolic washing of the feet of parishioners carried out during today’s liturgical celebration stands as a powerful reminder of Christ-like humility and servant leadership. It teaches us that in God’s service, true greatness is found in humility and service to others.

As we prayerfully reflect on the moments captured in the images from today’s celebration, may we be reminded of our collective call to love, to serve, and to build a stronger faith community rooted in Christ.

May the blessings and graces of this Holy Thursday renew our hearts, strengthen our unity as one family in Christ, and prepare us worthily for the celebration of the Paschal Mystery.

PRAYER FOR OUR PRIEST

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your servant, Rev. Fr. Dominic Nwaiwu. Continue to anoint him with the grace of the Holy Spirit, strengthen him in moments of difficulty, and reward his sacrifices with joy and fulfillment in his ministry. Grant him good health of body and peace of mind. May his priesthood continue to bear good fruits in the lives of your people.

Protect him Lord from discouragement, renew his zeal daily, and let his labour in Your vineyard never be in vain. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests, intercede for him always, and may St. Matthias Mulumba, our patron saint, continue to guide and protect his ministry.

May God bless and keep him always. Amen.

May the blessings and graces of this Holy Thursday renew our hearts, strengthen our unity as one family in Christ, and prepare us worthily for the celebration of the Paschal Mystery.

Wishing all parishioners a prayerful and grace-filled Holy Thursday.
